The Logos Free Book of the Month promo partners with Christian Focus in the first second of January to offer Dale Leschert’s book, The Flow of the New Testament: A Book by Book Guide to the New Testament (Christian Focus, 2002). This is a quick way of investigating a New Testament book. Leschert has created a unique resource to help everyone understand the New Testament. Each biblical book is outlined and described, and its connections with the rest of the New Testament are detailed. The Thomas Schreiner Fest continues in January with two more inexpensive books from him. When I reviewed the 1 Corinthians commentary when it was first published,I said:

This new commentary on 1 Corinthians is a welcome update to the Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. Although the book is brief compared to other recent commentaries, Schreiner offers enough social and cultural background to illuminate some of the more difficult sections of the letter and draws conservative, evangelical applications to contemporary issues. This commentary will serve pastors, teachers, and students as they study this important Pauline letter to their congregations.

This month, Logos also rolled out new 2025 denominational libraries. It is always a good time to get a new Logos Subscription. Although some are upset with the changes in the pricing model, there is nothing to fear. Essentially, you are paying what you would have once every two years for the old-model upgrades. This new subscription plan allows Logos to push new features every few months rather than one big upgrade every two years.

Even if you do not subscribe to Logos, you keep all your previously purchased books. Nobody will lose anything for not getting a subscription. You do not need to upgrade to a subscription model. If you do upgrade, you will get access to some cool new AI tools, which may or may not be necessary. They just added a Bible Study tool (like their sermon prep tool) that scrapes questions from your library to help generate a Bible Study or discussion.

For the second half of August 2024, you can add  Paul K. Hooker’s commentary on First and Second Chronicles in the Westminster Bible Companion series (WJKP 2001) to your Logos library for free. In the commentary, Hooker suggests that the First and Second Chronicles are not a “history of Israel” but a theological reflection on the story of Israel’s faith. From the blurb: “The Chronicler, according to Hooker, seeks to sketch the lines of Israel’s future as the people of God by drawing on the resources of Israel’s past.” Now retired, Hooker was Executive Presbyter and Stated Clerk at the Presbytery of St. Augustine in Jacksonville, Florida. He has posted many articles on The Presbyterian Outlook.  Although brief, this is a good commentary on Chronicles, which will be helpful for teachers and preachers.

There are plenty of excellent commentaries on the list this month. Clines, What Does Eve Do to Help? has some interesting essays (and Clines is always worth reading). Albertz, A History of Israelite Religion in the Old Testament Period is a great deal on an academic study of Israel’s history. Although pricey, you ought to pre-order Beverly Roberts Gaventa’s Romans commentary in the NTL. I have a print copy, and it is excellent. The Logos Free Book page has been upgraded and now includes links to other Logos monthly sales. Go check it out and buy all the cheap books.

As some readers might know, Logos is rolling out a new subscription-based service in the fall. This will allow them to update features more quickly (as opposed to a major upgrade every two years). This means no more metal/mineral-named levels. New users will be able to get the full feature set for a low monthly subscription fee rather than invest hundreds of dollars.  This month, pick up The Biblical Expositor, Vol. 2: Job-Malachi, for FREE until July 15. Edited by Carl F. H. Henry, The Biblical Expositor is a three-volume commentary on the whole BIble originally published in the early 60s. There are some hidden gems in the collection (J. I. Packer on Galatians, for example). In this free volume, Gleason Archer contributes Isaiah. Some seem like strange selections, such as Egyptologist Kenneth Kitchen on Proverbs and several classic Reformed evangelicals (Clarence Bass on Nahum; Edward Young on Zephaniah, for example).

One of my favorite publishers to visit at SBL each year is Langham Publishing. Langham features scholars from the Majority World, especially PhDs, looking to publish their work. I have purchased two of these books in print at conferences (Isaac, From Land to Lands, and Gao, Heaven and Earth in Luke-Acts). Both are excellent monographs and I highly recommend them.
