It is the end of the summer, and like most full time educators I am mourning the end, but looking forward to a great new semester. To celebrate, I want to give away one book a week for the next month. First up is Mark Edward’s recent Story of God commentary on Ephesians (Zondervan, 2016). Roberts is a pastor, author, retreat leader, speaker, and blogger (although he has not posted in 2019).
Since 2015, he has been the Executive Director of the Max De Pree Center for Leadership at Fuller Seminary. The commentary series combines academic insights with a pastoral heart. I had the opportunity to meet Mark this summer and thought he was the ideal person to write this kind of commentary. He is a scholar who has spent much of his career in some sort of pastoral ministry. I have read through the commentary and it is quite useful.

My favorite commentary on Ephesians? Good question. I own Markus Barth’s monster but have grown dissatisfied with it over the years. Lincoln and O’Brien are solid but not really exciting. And that’s what I own. Which one do you recommend?
Years ago I enjoyed reading a short expository account called “Sit, Walk, Stand”, by Watchman Nee. I don’t remember much more than the title, which is also the outline.
My favorite commentary is the encyclopedic treatment by Hoehner.
Not exactly a commentary (not remotely a commentary?) but Sit, Walk, Stand by Watchman Nee.
Dwight Gingrich. I probably use Clint Arnold’s ZECNT commentary the most.
My mum used to remind us waht Ephesians 6:1 “Children, obey your parents in the LORD: for this is right.” (KJV)
Ephesians… where I first learned about the biggest word in teh Scriptures…. “therefore”.

Zach Kemper – My favorite commentary on Ephesians is The Bible Knowledge Commentary mainly because of the format and making light of the recent disputes questioning Pauline authorship of this epistle.

I’m still looking for a favorite commentary on Ephesians. I’ve used Harold Hoehner’s the most, and it’s great for digging into the Greek, but I find it’s not as good for helping one grasp the larger theological picture. Loses the forest for the trees, so to speak.
Perhaps the best in the Harry A. Ironside commentary series is his treatment of Ephesians
