Book Giveaway – Andrew Abernathy, The Book of Isaiah and God’s Kingdom (IVP 2016)

abernety-isaiahIt is the beginning of a new year, and to celebrate I am offering a brand new copy of Andrew Abernathy’s The Book of Isaiah and God’s Kingdom: A Thematic-Theological Approach (NSBT 40; Downers Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity, 2016).

I reviewed the book at the end of the year, follow the link and read what I said then, here is the teaser:

This new contribution to the New Studies in Biblical Theology series focuses on the theme of Kingdom in the book of Isaiah. The topic of kingdom in the whole canon of Scripture is too large for a short monograph, but by limiting the discussion to Isaiah Abernethy is able to provide a reasonable foundation for understanding the book of Isaiah and its foundational role in a Christian understanding of Jesus. Abernethy’s previous book on Isaiah focused on the theme of food in Isaiah (Eating in Isaiah: Approaching the Role of Food and Drink in Isaiah’s Structure and Message. Leiden: Brill 2014, reviewed here).

You can enter by leaving a comment telling me your favorite passage in Isaiah. Only one chance per person. If you leave more than one comment, I will only count one comment per person for the contest.

On Monday January 9 I will randomly select one comment and ship the book out to the lucky winner.  Check back then to see if you are the winner, and I will announce another giveaway on January 9. You can also follow me on twitter @plong42 to keep up with these announcements.

Good Luck!

  1. My favorite verses in Isaiah are 40:9-31 they speak of the greatness of God. When I get discouraged with the world around me I go to these passages to remind me of God’s greatness.

  2. Isaiah 61. My old band recorded our own rendition of “Awesome God” and used that passage as one of the things making it different. Give it a listen here if you’d like ‪http://wildatheart777.bandcamp.com/track/awesome-god‬.

  3. Philip, my favourite passage is Isaiah 40 because of the questions and statements of God to his people and the great description of his character and workings. Pastor Gord Abraham rgabe@sympatico.ca 90 King St., Pot Colborne. Ontario Canada L3K 4E9

  4. Favorite? Impossible question… But one passage I like is 45:22-23, in the context of its surprising fulfillment in Philippians 2:9-11. What a shocking move from monotheism to Christology!

  5. My favorite passage is Isaiah 6:1-13 about Isaiah’s call to address the corrupt Davidic dynasty.

  6. Isaiah 40:29-31 He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

  7. Favorite Isaiah passage: Is 58:6-14. A small sample: ““Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free and to break every yoke? Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? (ESV)

  8. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you.
4 Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life. (Isa 43.3-4)
